Lab vs Natural Diamonds: The 2026 Price Reality

The diamond market in 2026 is two entirely different conversations happening in the same room. A 1-carat natural diamond costs ₹1.5-3 lakh. A comparable lab-grown stone costs ₹25,000-75,000. That is an 80-90% difference — and it is reshaping every jewellery purchase decision from engagement rings to anniversary gifts.

Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen approximately 88% since 2020, with a 26% wholesale drop in 2025 alone. However, Q1 2026 showed the smallest quarterly decline in eight consecutive quarters, and 1-carat wholesale prices ticked up 1% in Q2 2026 — suggesting the market may be approaching a production-cost floor.

The industry response has been dramatic. De Beers shut down its lab-grown brand Lightbox in May 2025 after the price collapse made the business model untenable, pivoting to natural-only. Meanwhile, lab-grown now represents 45-48% of U.S. engagement ring sales, and India reached a milestone in FY 2025-26: polished lab-grown exports (18.8 million carats) surpassed natural exports (16 million carats) for the first time.

What Your Money Actually Buys

At the 1-carat level: a natural diamond at ₹1.5-3L retains resale value and carries geological rarity. A lab-grown at ₹25,000-75,000 is chemically identical but has near-zero resale value — it is a luxury consumable, not an investment. At 2 carats: natural runs ₹8-17L while lab-grown sits at ₹1.5-2.5L — meaning the lab-grown buyer gets significantly more visual presence for dramatically less capital.

HEII Score: 2/5 ★★

  • Lab-grown offers 80-90% savings with identical visual and chemical properties ✅
  • Natural diamonds retain resale value and geological scarcity ✅
  • India is now the world's largest lab-grown diamond exporter ✅
  • Lab-grown resale value is effectively zero — buy for beauty, not investment ⚠️

Verdict: The answer depends entirely on what you are buying a diamond for. If it is a symbol of permanence and an asset that holds value, natural is still the only conversation. If it is a beautiful stone for a beautiful moment and you would rather spend the difference on the honeymoon, lab-grown has never made more sense.
