Oberoi Udaivilas vs Raffles Udaipur: Two Lakes, Two Philosophies, One Honest Verdict

Udaipur, Rajasthan

There is a specific kind of anxiety that arrives when you are planning a significant trip to Udaipur and must choose between the Oberoi Udaivilas and Raffles Udaipur. They both involve lake views. They both involve prices that require a quiet moment with your banking app. They both offer the possibility of feeling like a Mughal emperor for 48 hours. The question is which one actually delivers.

We have done the research. Here is the honest verdict.

The Contenders

The Oberoi Udaivilas sits on the shores of Lake Pichola, separated from the city by its own gardens and the quiet certainty of its own excellence. Ranked among the world’s best hotels by Condé Nast Traveller and Travel + Leisure for years running — rankings that are not wrong — the Udaivilas is architecturally extraordinary: domed pavilions, marble colonnades, fountains, and a swimming pool designed to appear to flow directly into the lake. Rooms start at approximately ₹65,000–₹80,000 per night; suites run significantly higher. The peacocks are real and unscheduled.

Raffles Udaipur occupies its own island on Udai Sagar Lake, accessed by boat. This is not a metaphor; you literally arrive by water. The property offers a degree of remove that the Udaivilas, for all its lakeside grandeur, cannot quite match — when you are on an island, the city is genuinely somewhere else. The aesthetic is contemporary rather than heritage-inspired, a considered choice that is either a feature or a bug depending on your preferences. Rooms start at approximately ₹40,000–₹55,000 per night.

The Honest Comparison

On setting, the Udaivilas wins by a margin that is difficult to argue with. The view of the City Palace from the hotel gardens is the view. Lake Pichola at dusk from the Udaivilas terrace is among the most beautiful things you can see in India, and the hotel is architected to ensure you are always looking at it.

On service, both properties deliver at the level their prices demand: attentive, anticipatory, never intrusive. The Udaivilas has the longer track record. Raffles has the energy of a property still in the serious business of impressing.

On dining, Udaivilas edges ahead. Its lakefront restaurant is a proper evening — the kind of dinner that becomes part of the travel memory rather than simply fuel between experiences.

On value, Raffles has the compelling counter-argument: a genuinely remarkable experience at a price point that, relative to the Udaivilas, allows you to book a longer stay. And the island arrival by boat — watching the sun go down over Udai Sagar from your own remove — is an experience with no direct competitor.

The Verdict

First time in Udaipur: Oberoi Udaivilas. The setting, the reputation, and the sense of having experienced the definitive version of a place make this the correct answer. This is not a property you visit twice before visiting once.

Return visit, or if you want something quieter and more private: Raffles. The island dynamic creates its own kind of luxury — the luxury of actual remove, of a trip where the hotel is the destination.

HEII Score: 5/5 ★★★★★ (Udaivilas) | 86/100 (Raffles). Two extraordinary hotels making different arguments for the same city. The Udaivilas is the summit of Indian palace hotel hospitality. Raffles is the private island escape Udaipur didn’t know it needed. Both justify the price. The question is only which dream you’re having right now.
